Michael Jackson History on Film Volume II, which was an entry in the Film Music series published by Kendor Music Inc. and released by BMG Gold Records, is a 1998 compilation album of music from various Michael Jackson productions. The music on this album includes songs from Thriller (1982), Off The Wall (1984), and Bad (1987). The album's release marked the first time that many of these songs had been given a full volume release outside of Japan. This marked Michael Jackson as one of few African American artists to be included in its anthology series with such success as Frank Sinatra and Louis Armstrong, who had only one entry each, for example. Jackson's music was released along with other popular musicians in history, such as Nat King Cole, Bing Crosby, and Billie Holiday. The album was released in cassette and compact disc formats. The cassette version features the same track listing but in a different order than that of the CD version. Both editions of the album include liner notes written by Michael Jackson biographer J. Randy Taraborrelli. Track 5 "Human Nature" is incorrectly listed on the back cover as "Rock With You". This is actually an error on BMG's part since Michael Jackson himself did not change the title of this song for Thriller (1982). And also, no other track listing of any CD release of this song even includes the words "Rock With You" in the title, so it is entirely possible that BMG made a mistake. This album has been a part of controversy because a few songs on the album, such as "Billie Jean" from Thriller and "Bad" from Bad have been brought to court by other companies suing Michael Jackson for copyright violation over elements in his music. In addition, there is speculation that "Beat It" from Thriller was actually copied from another song called "The End" by Los Angeles rock group Van Halen. Michael Jackson sued the band and song writer Jeff Burton, who had brought a copyright infringement suit against Michael Jackson over the song, with Van Halen's permission after the case was settled. Michael Jackson also sued BMG for copyright violation of his songs such as "Man in the Mirror", which was wrongly credited to Paul Oakenfold and "Give In To Me" but credited to Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones. Despite this controversy, this album is considered one of the best expansions of Michael Jackson's music, due to its detailed liner notes written by biographer J. Randy Taraborrelli. The other two entries in the series are for Thriller (1982) and Off The Wall (1984). This album peaked at #200 on the Billboard 200 album chart.Vinyl LP release (447 501-2) Sony Special Products CAT#: 60494-18273-2/3, 60494-18273-3, 60494-18273-4 (Cassette) & 60494-18273 (CD) All songs written, composed and produced by Michael Jackson, except where noted.
